Blogs – Are You Reading Them? Like just about every subculture on the Internet, the blogosphere continues to grow at an unprecedented rate and bloggers are writing about every topic imaginable. Major media outlets are using blogs as a method to “break” or deliver news quickly and businesses are now creating blogs to promote products and trends to their audience or to communicate with their employees. Popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo offer options to search for blogs containing certain keywords or phrases. Web sites such as Technorati.com and IceRocket.com are designed to search the Internet specifically for blogs and can help you track what people are saying about you or your product.

Be A Part of A Network Online networking sites are a dime a dozen these days, however they are not being used solely by teens any longer. In December of 2007, eMarketer reported that 37 percent of US adults utilize social networks. As these sites gain popularity, the numbers are sure to increase. The question is—which networking sites do people use? Well-known sites such as Myspace.com and Facebook.com (two of the top six online destinations in terms of global minutes), offer blogs, chat opportunities, groups and music in order to connect people to one another. Users can search for people who share similar interests or who may be in a similar industry. Business owners are increasingly using networking sites to promote their products or services. Twitter.com is a micro-blog with one main goal—disperse information quickly and easily to groups of individuals. Users create accounts to post messages to their own specific audiences basically answering one question, “What are you doing?” Sites such as LinkedIn.com allow users to expand their professional network by industry or by connecting to other members through existing contacts. LinkedIn offers members an opportunity to promote themselves to the business world, ask questions specific to a certain industry and to post or respond to employment queries. Free sites such as Netvibes.com allow users to build a single homepage to keep everything in one place—email, news and access to their various accounts from several networking sites. The selection of networking sites continues to grow and many of these sites offer something unique not offered by others. Utilizing networking sites as part of your overall public relations plan has the potential to enhance your visibility to a new audience. Need a little help on joining a networking site?
