The Firm Public Relations and Marketing Was Bursting at the Seams!
The interior of the building was designed by longtime Las Vegas architect Dr. Robert A. Fielden of RAFI, whose other projects include the master planning of the UNLV Campus and architecture design of the KNPR Broadcast Facility. The general contractor was Larry Johnson of Blackstone Builders, Inc. "It was important that we create a beautiful work space that motivates our employees and inspires our clients," said Solveig Thorsrud, founder and president of The Firm. Energy saving natural light fixtures were incorporated into the building plan. Called Solatube skylights, the strategically placed fixtures generate ample natural sunlight allowing employees to enjoy most of their workday without the use of fluorescent bulbs. To complete the calm environment, Thorsrud reached out to third-generation feng shui master Lin Huang of Qi Feng Shui Gallery to advise her in office flow, energy and organization. A specific color palate, the order of employee offices, cleansing ceremonies and feng shui symbols and trinkets are all a part of creating the correct energy. Firm Tip: Online Social Networking Plays a Large Role in Business With the popularity of networking websites such as Friendster and MySpace, online social marketing has proven to be huge business. While these sites do not require users to pay membership fees, advertisements are sold to companies who target their specific audience by researching likes and dislikes in individual user profiles. Movie studios, musicians, celebrity fan clubs, comedians, distributors of cocktails and nightclub owners are among those who use these virtual communities as ways to promote their product or endorse a cause. A new online society recently launched—Second Life—and is a three-dimensional, cyber world where members literally lead double lives by creating avatars and building online alter egos. Once set up with a Second Life account and an avatar, members interact with others while strolling, playing, volunteering and even shopping. Business now plays a significant role on Second Life. Members can open and operate their own businesses and make real money. For use in the online world, U.S. American dollars are exchanged for Linden dollars, the currency named after Second Life creators Linden Lab in San Francisco, and can be used to purchase everything from land and buildings to food and clothing. Companies such as Adidas, Toyota and IBM have set up shop in the cyber world to market directly to members. The University of Texas, Dallas recently opened an art exhibit in Second Life and musicians have created profiles to promote tours and upcoming recordings. Media outlets from The New York Times to the Belfast Telegraph have covered the phenomenon, with news service Reuters recently launching a news bureau within the community. According to various reports, membership of Second Life membership neared 100,000 in early 2006 and in less than a year has grown to more than 1.3 million. The community has become so popular that a separate teen version of Second Life has launched, opening the door for advertisers to target a demographic with significant buying power.
