Favorite Read: Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

“I’m a huge reader so it’s difficult to pick just one book. I love so many. One that pops into my mind is a book I read as a youngster and still enjoy. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is a beautiful, powerful story about courage, spirit and survival.”

Favorite Read: The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo

“I recently read The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo. It’s a fun homage to the classic Western murder mystery (a la Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr), capturing the essence of the “Golden Age” of detective fiction, but set in pre-WW2 Japan. Most of these novels can be read in a day or two, and I love the whodunit genre for its fast-paced plots and cast of eccentric stock characters.”

Lauren

Favorite Read: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

“My favorite book is Flowers for Algernon. I originally read it for a school project when I was in 8th grade, but I absolutely loved how unique and creative it was! Without giving away too many spoilers, It was really cool to see how the main character progressed and how the experiment he was participating in essentially both helped and hurt him. Since the book is written as the main character’s diary, it was interesting to see the contrast of his writing throughout the story, too. 10/10 – would recommend!”

Paula

Favorite Read: Becoming by Michelle Obama

“This book was a gift from a wonderful friend of mine while I was going through some life altering personal and professional challenges. As I turned each page, I felt a connection and inspiration in Michelle Obama’s journey. It was deeply personal, relatable, funny, warm and wise. Shortly after, the friend that gifted me the book, surprised me with tickets for her and I to see the former first lady on her revolutionary book tour in Los Angeles. That experience was as life changing and empowering as the book. While my friend and I have different political views, it was never about politics, it’s always about love, support and friendship.”

Favorite Read: That’s Bold of You By Case Kenny

“I recently read That’s Bold of You by Case Kenny. He’s a leader in the mindfulness space and the book was such a confidence-boosting pick-me-up. Its tagline is ‘How to thrive as your most vibrant, weird, and real self.’ In a world that too often likes to look down on those who are doing things differently or independently, it framed things beautifully, essentially driving home that your ‘weirdest’ traits may in fact be your best and to let them shine.”

D’Andre

Favorite Read: Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz

“It’s an incredibly powerful collection of poetry that details the author’s struggle to defy the historical erasure of Latinx, indigenous, black and brown people in the U.S. I read this book two years ago during my final semester at Amherst College and it inspired me to reengage with own poetry, which evolved into a journey I’m still navigating today.”

Darian

Favorite Read: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

“There’s something about Gothic Fiction that blends all of my tastes together into a package that feels perfect for me. Jane Eyre is the epitome of that perfect balance between Gothic and Romantic fiction.”

Joe

Favorite Read: 11/26/63 by Stephen King

“The chance at changing history and time travel has always intrigued me. This book offers both. I love it!”
